The “Valle de Mena” is situated in the county of Merindades, in the extreme north of the province of Burgos, in an area historically known as the Mountains of Burgos.
The valley is bound to the north by the county Encartaciones, of Vizcaya; to the east by Vizcaya and the “Valle de Ayala”, Alava; to the west by the “‘Merindad de Montija”, Burgos and, finally, to the south by the “Valle de Losa” and the “Junta de Traslaloma”, Burgos. The northwest corner touches the “Valle de Asón”, Cantabria.
It is 115 km from Burgos, the capital of the province, 45 km from Bilbao (Vizcaya), 74 km from Vitoria (Alava) and 103km from Santander (Cantabria).
Nowadays, the Mena Valley includes 60 villages and around 30 hamlets over an area of 258 km2, with a total population of more than 3,500 inhabitants.
